With busy lives both at home and at work, we need a space to relax and escape.
You don’t need to have a dedicated room to find zen in your home, you simply need to take ownership of a space and decorate it so it reflects all the things you love.
My little place of sanctuary is found under a bay window overlooking the Waitakeres where my yoga mat is rolled out permanently and indoor plants are clambering for space nestled beside natural hides and timbers.
It’s not much, but it is mine.
Your nook could be a little craft station in the hallway cupboard, under the stairs or a corner of a room where you play an instrument.

You might even find that your zen spot is at the workbench in the garage. If so, put some time into organising your things, a decent working stool, stereo, and perhaps a bar fridge.
Wherever it is, pay attention to what you need such as acoustics, light, a nice chair or inspiring art to complete the space.
While it’s best to find a space with nice natural light to enhance wellbeing, most of us work during the day so it’s important to think about the ambience of this space in the evening as well as before work or on the weekends.
Bedroom nooks are a perfect place for a secret sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of what can be quite chaotic moments elsewhere in the house.

If you have a large enough space, an armchair with an ottoman is a perfect corner filler coupled with a nice piece of art and a cosy throw that is only for you to use.
Think about the fabric selection and how you can personalise this. Perhaps it’s your favourite colour or a pattern that you love. Most importantly, don’t get talked into or out of something that you want.
If you aren’t 100% then you are less likely to use it.

If you have a conservatory then you have finally found out a decent use for it.
Claim it as yours and decorate with a chic boho style by using rattan, plants, books and lots of layering of textures to create a luxurious cosy sanctuary.
Furniture-wise, explore options of floor cushions, day beds, high back chairs or a single chaise.
I’ve even known clients who have emptied their garden shed and set it up as their zen space for making pottery.

Call me old-fashioned but I love a good bath surrounded by beautiful towels, luxurious waffle robe, decadent candles, plants and a locked door.
The bathroom is last on the list to include it in the zen spots for your home.
Now this might be a stretch to achieve if your bathroom is in need of a renovation.
But, on the flip side, if it does, include this type of thinking when planning the design and selection of materials.
